Jeypore, Odisha, India (Nov 2022)
The town of Jeypore lies in the Adivasi belt of southern Odisha. Until its founding in the 17th century by a king, Jeypore was the site of a dense hill forest. Under the British, it became a zamindari and then a princely state. It has a pleasant lake at its center, and a fresh produce market, near a palace where descendants of erstwhile royals still live, is a good place to see several of the 62 Adivasi groups of Odisha, with many women sporting distinctive body piercings, jewelry, and tattoos.
